Sixdegrees the first social network
Do you know what the first social network in history was?
SixDegrees was the first social network, created in 1996 by Andrew Weinreich.
For years, there have been numerous social networks: Messenger (1999), MySpace (2003), Facebook (2004), Instagram (2010), TikTok (2016)… but did you know about the first one to ever exist?
The first social network in history, Sixdegrees.com, was based on the “six degrees of separation” concept, which claims it’s possible to connect with anyone on the planet through five intermediaries and the recipient.
The advent of the internet revolutionized the world, as a portion of communication had taken on another form. This is like sending messages in bottles tossed into the sea but done directly and instantly.
Thanks to Andrew Weinreich’s idea, more and more direct communication platforms emerged, even though blog-dedicated websites already existed. The main features of this social network were: the ability to create profiles, connect with friends, search for people, send direct messages, and join shared groups. Despite being a completely innovative and pioneering platform for what social networks are today, SixDegrees did not succeed and was sold in 2000. Today, we have more than 12 social networks.
